Red de redes de economia alternativa y solidaria (REAS)

I. What is REAS

REAS is a network of networks of ALTERNATIVE AND SOLIDARITY ECONOMY, composed of more than five hundred entities grouped into territorial and sectoral networks. We are present in the international arena through RIPESS (Intercontinental Network for the Promotion of the Social and Solidarity Economy). Legally, REAS is an Association of non-profit nature, without partisan or religious affiliation, with scope of action throughout the territory of the Spanish State.

1. Why and what for REAS was born

The Solidarity Economy arises from the need to respond to the growing dehumanization of the economy, the deterioration of the Environment and the quality of life, as well as the lack of ethical values that produce a growing degradation in culture and education. The most obvious consequences of this dehumanization of the economy are: the increase of poverty and social inequalities, affecting especially women, social and economic exclusion, unemployment and precarious employment. The magnitude of the problem that surrounds us generates challenges and demands answers that allow us to face so many deficiencies and deteriorations.

That is why Reas’s fundamental mission is to promote the Solidarity Economy as an instrument that allows the development of a more just and supportive society, moving towards sustainable development and taking into account the interdependence of the economic, social, environmental and cultural aspects of society. That is, an economy based on the quality of life of the people as actors and protagonists of their own development and that of all the others and not mere subjects who are the recipients of the decisions of others.

The main purpose of REAS is to make this other way of approaching and managing the economy possible, by empowering, supporting and coordinating the associative, entrepreneurial, economic and financial initiatives that are committed to the six major principles of the Solidarity Charter that in its day we adopted. You can see all the contents of the Solidarity Charter at the link:

2. How and when REAS was constituted

Many entities with extensive experience of involvement in the social and economic field, were aware of the difficulties experienced in providing real solutions to the social, economic and cultural integration of a part of the population, especially the most disadvantaged. The need to strengthen ties and generate different approaches, which facilitate and promote possible, real and lasting alternatives was the reason for creating increasingly numerous links that culminated in the creation of the REAS network. This was constituted in the year 1995 and in December 2000 its statutes were modified to become a Network of Networks, which since then includes both territorial and sectoral networks.
